Legacy Analog to Digital Format Transition Solutions

From Tape to True IP , One Signal Path, Zero Compromise

Every broadcast facility eventually hits the same wall: decades of valuable content sitting on U-Matic, Betacam, and other analog formats, while the rest of the plant is racing toward IP. Tape doesn’t wait; oxide sheds, decks age out of production, and every year that legacy media stays untouched is a year closer to permanent loss. At the same time, no engineering team wants to run two completely separate infrastructures, one for “old” analog workflows and another for “new” ST 2110 production, patched together with one-off converters and hope.

PLURA’s Legacy Analog to Digital format transition solution was built to close that gap in a single, coherent signal chain. Rather than treating analog migration as a side project bolted onto the IP core, this architecture treats it as a first-class citizen of the same Media LAN , meaning a U-Matic deck rolling in Master Control has the same redundancy, the same monitoring, and the same IP transport protections as a live 2110 camera feed. Engineers get one signal path, one set of sync references, and one redundant network fabric carrying both the legacy digitization work and the facility’s live production traffic.

How the Workflow Comes Together

Walking the signal from left to right on the diagram shows exactly how each piece earns its place in the chain:

1. Source playback. A U-Matic VCR (or any legacy analog deck) outputs Composite, YC, or Component analog video, along with up to 8 channels of analog audio.

2. Stabilize and convert to SD-SDI. The video is fed into the BrightEye 3 (BE3), which applies TBC/Frame Sync correction and converts the analog signal to clean SD-SDI, the critical first step, since analog tape sources are rarely stable enough to feed directly into a digital chain.

3. Reference and timing. A Tri-Level PAL reference from the BrightEye 57 (BE57) Test Signal Generator keeps the BE3 and downstream converters genlocked, while an external Black Burst reference ties the whole analog side of the chain to house sync.

4. Audio embedding and final conditioning. The BrightEye 90-A (BE90-A) takes the PAL SD-SDI video, embeds the analog audio channels with adjustable delay for lip-sync, and outputs a fully embedded PAL SDI signal, ready either for monitoring on a Plura monitor / SDI capture card, or for onward transport.

5. SDI into the IP domain. The embedded SDI signal is handed to a BrightEye Gateway 4 (BEGW-4), which encapsulates it into ST 2110 essence streams , generating both a 2110 Main and a 2110 Backup copy simultaneously.

6. Redundant transport across the Media LAN. The Main and Backup streams travel on physically separate paths through independent Main and Backup switch fabrics. This isn’t just cable redundancy , it’s full ST 2022-7-style seamless protection switching, so a switch failure, a bad port, or a damaged fiber run never interrupts delivery.

7. De-encapsulation at the destination. On the far side of the Media LAN, a second BEGW-4 receives both the Main and Backup 2110 streams and converts them back to SDI for local monitors and displays.

8. IP-native monitoring. In parallel, an SFP-217-25G monitor taps the same Main/Backup 2110 streams directly off the network over True-IP 25GbE , giving operators a protected, IP-native view of the exact same content, with no additional SDI conversion stage required.

The result is a single, closed-loop workflow: analog goes in on one end, and a fully redundant, IP-native, ST 2110 signal comes out the other , monitored in both SDI and true IP form at every stage along the way.

    EQUIPMENT AT A GLANCE

    1. BrightEye 3 (BE3) – PAL Analog Video to SD-SDI converter
    2. BrightEye 57 (BE57) – 3G/HD/SD Test Signal Generator (Tri-Level PAL reference)
    3. BrightEye 90-A (BE90-A) – PAL Digital & Analog Video Up/Down/Cross Converter w/ Audio Delay & Embedding
    4. BrightEye Gateway 4 (BEGW-4) – SDI-to-2110 gateway
    5. SFP-217-25G – True-IP 25GbE monitor
    6. SFP-209-25G-H – TRUE-IP 25GbE portable broadcast monitor

    Plura Event Timer System P.E.T.S.

redefining how time is managed during events.

“intuitive and flexible ecosystem to control allocated time.”

Plura excited to announce the world premiere of the Plura Event Timer System (P.E.T.S.) during IBC 2025.

The Plura Event Timer System (P.E.T.S.) is a purpose-built timing platform designed to keep programs disciplined, fair, and on schedule—without adding friction for speakers, moderators, or production crews. Built on Plura’s 40+ years of timing expertise, it gives timekeepers precise, real-time control to startstoppause, or yield minutes with a single action. Whether you’re managing a live broadcast, a city council meeting, a high-stakes debate, or a fast-moving conference agenda, the Event Timer delivers the same thing every time: clarity, consistency, and confidence.

    System Architecture & Components

The Plura Event Timer System (P.E.T.S.) is more than a single product — it’s a flexible and intuitive ecosystem of hardware and software modules that can be scaled to fit virtually any event environment, from small council meetings to large scale parliamentary sessions. Every component of the system is designed to work together seamlessly, providing moderators and operators with precise control over timing. This also ensures that audiences, speakers, and record-keepers have clear and accurate information throughout the event.

    Key Highlights

    • Real time authority for timekeepers
Instantly grant, reclaim, or redistribute time to keep segments balanced and fair—no guesswork or awkward hand signals.
    • Multiple control modes
Choose the workflow that fits your room: physical buzzer, GPIO, on-screen icon control, or mobile device operation.
    • Clear, speaker-friendly cues
Pair with UD / UD Stage displays for large, high-contrast timers and optional audible/visual cues that reduce on-stage anxiety.
    • Built for live production
Low-friction operation, minimal training, and deterministic behavior—ideal for studios, stages, and civic chambers.
    • Configurable to your needs and specifications
Define segment lengths, warning thresholds, color logic, grace periods, and “yield minutes” behavior to match your format.
    • Proven, broadcast-grade lineage
Backed by Plura’s decades of experience delivering timing solutions to the world’s most demanding environments.

    Core Components

    • Event Client Processor (ECP)
      • The ECP is the dedicated hardware engine of P.E.T.S. A single ECP generates and processes six individual timers or speakers simultaneously, each independently controllable. For larger productions, additional ECP units can be stacked, expanding capacity to dozens of speakers or parallel sessions without loss of performance.
    • Event Timer Application (ETA)
      • The ETA is the software brain of the system, installed on either a local or cloud server. Through the P.E.T.S. user interface, the ETA connects, configures, and manages all hardware devices in real time. It also integrates with additional Plura software, third-party plugins, or approved external applications — creating a unified environment where every timer, cue, and display is synchronized.
    • Event Timer Recorder (ETR)
      • The ETR is an AI-powered plugin (available as a cloud service or local module) that records, indexes, and archives your event. It can capture user-defined channels, apply accurate timecode, and generate searchable timelines. With keyword search, operators and clerks can instantly find the exact moment a statement was made — streamlining compliance reviews, public records, and content reuse.
    • Displays (UD & UD Stage Series + SPT)
      • All Plura UD and UD Stage display units, as well as the SPT series, integrate directly with P.E.T.S. These rugged, high-contrast displays and control panels deliver crystal-clear timing information to speakers, audiences, and production staff, ensuring that no one ever loses track of the clock.

We Listen. We Understand. We Deliver

“Unlike other generic clock apps, The Plura Event Timer system offers a specialized solution for managing events, from small council meetings to large-scale parliamentary sessions. It was developed based on extensive feedback from customers who needed a turnkey solution tailored to their specific event timing requirements.”

    Ray Kalo, President & CEO

    Why It matters

P.E.T.S. isn’t just a clock — it’s a platform. By integrating timing, visibility, and searchable records, it enables organizations to:

    ·  Keep live sessions fair, balanced, and efficient.

    ·  Provide clear, unambiguous timing to both speakers and audiences.

    ·  Maintain accurate, searchable archives for compliance, governance, or editorial review.

    ·  Scale flexibly as events grow in size, complexity, or technical requirements. With P.E.T.S., time isn’t just counted — it’s managed, recorded, and made actionable.

    Conclusion

With over 40 years of experience in leading broadcast timing solutions, we continuously strive for innovation and reliability. We are also able to tailor timing solutions to your specific requirements.
